Credit Cards Help Small Businesses Grow
If you are just starting a small business, you might consider accepting credit cards from customers as optional, a nice-to-have but not essential offering, and the process of applying for merchant status might seem like a hassle you could do without. It is definitely not easy to do all the necessary legwork to get the status from banks and credit cards companies.
However, there are many inherent rewards of setting your company up in order to accept cards that could boost your business's sales and lead to its growth. So, what are these benefits that a business reaps in letting customers use credit cards to pay for their purchases?
There are many, in fact. Having a credit card in hand that they can use allows the consumers to buy more than they can with the cash in hand. They tend to buy faster with credit since they do not have to leave the merchant's premises to retrieve more cash. Since they are not limited by cash in hand, their purchasing power increases, and so the probability of a purchase goes higher.
Credit card purchases make returns and exchanges easier. And then there are many, like out of town travelers, who prefer not to carry too much money on them for reasons of safety and ease, and would rather make the payments through credit cards.
When customers can pay via credit cards, this increases the chances that they will buy something they see and really like. So, the ability to pay through credit card is not turning away sales. When a customer spontaneously likes merchandise, she can indulge in the impulse and purchase the merchandise even when she might not have the ready money to buy it with. This payment option significantly increases the likelihood that she will buy more than she could have without this option.
The ease this provides to the consumer is significant too. Not every person carries much cash with him or her, especially when they are traveling. Plastic is much easier to carry around than bulk of cash, and preferred by many people. It also builds a confidence in them for your company, which will lead to them to buying from you more frequently.
Having a merchant status and being able to accept credit cards works well for business owners too. When customers make spontaneous and quick buys, buys that are more than the cash they have on person or even more than what they have in their checking accounts, this boosts the business owners' sales.
Their cash flow improves. With credit cards they receive the money in a few days, while in case of checks they have to wait much longer. In fact, credit cards provide a safeguard to the merchant that they will receive their payment in a few days; while with personal checks there is always a chance that they could bounce.
For accepting major credit cards, you will have to set up merchant status with each credit card company for which you will be accepting cards. To apply for merchant status with American Express or Discover, you will only need to contact them directly and fill their respective applications. The process of setting up to accept Visa or MasterCard is more cumbersome. It's not possible to apply directly to them since they are bank associations. So what you will need is to setup merchant accounts through one of the many banks associated with them. You will want to go through this process since Visa or MasterCard are cards that are used frequently as well.
